MADRID, Mexico (AP) - Men with erectile dysfunction are being warned to avoid Viagra, the popular drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, because of concerns about its side effects.
Doctors are still trying to figure out why Viagra can make men feel better, and why some men have been warned that taking the drug could cause dangerous side effects, according to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
"It is important to note that Viagra is not for everyone," said Dr. Peter D. Leavitt, an endocrinologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital, who is also a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic.
While Viagra is approved for use by most U. pharmacies, it is available only to patients who can take the drug at recommended dosages.
The FDA said that men with serious health conditions like heart disease or low blood pressure are not advised to take Viagra.
Dr. Leavitt, the lead investigator on the FDA's investigation, said that while some men have reported using Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, others who take the drug for other conditions cannot take it.
The FDA advised patients to avoid using the drug because it can cause side effects and can interfere with other treatments.
In a statement, Pfizer Inc., the company that makes Viagra, defended its safety of using the drug.
Pfizer spokesman David Brennan said: "This warning is based on the assumption that Viagra will be used to treat erectile dysfunction and is not for men with certain medical conditions, and that we strongly recommend that men with erectile dysfunction are not taking Viagra or any other ED medication."
The FDA's review also found that Viagra has been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in people with pre-existing heart conditions.
The FDA also said that some men may have taken Viagra to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Viagra is not approved for use by U. pharmacies.
It is also not recommended for use by women, particularly those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, said Dr. Diana DeGette, a reproductive endocrinologist at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
"The FDA is not aware of any studies on this topic, but the FDA continues to follow strict guidelines to minimize the risks of men taking certain medications," she said.
The FDA's review of the safety of Viagra is still ongoing, and a decision will be made at a later date if the FDA deems it appropriate.
The FDA also said that some patients have reported problems with sexual function.

A new drug that treats erectile dysfunction is getting a boost from a new study from the drugmaker. The company has received approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the drug.
The drug, known as tadalafil, is being studied in clinical trials for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. “Tadalafil was originally developed as an angina medication, but it was found to have unexpected side effects, including an increased risk of heart attack and stroke,” said Dr. John R. Kuchela, professor of urology at the University of Washington. “Since the drug was first approved, we have seen significant improvement in erectile function in men with ED. We believe that this is an important new treatment for this condition.”
The FDA also approved tadalafil for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The drug was initially developed as an angina medication but was later found to have unexpected side effects. It is thought to work by relaxing muscles in the blood vessels of the penis, which leads to an increased blood flow.
“Tadalafil has been associated with a significant reduction in the risk of priapism, a prolonged erection,” said Dr. Michael J. Koeppe, professor of urology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “The drug’s efficacy in the treatment of ED is still developing.”
Tadalafil is currently under investigation by the FDA for possible misuse and abuse in the United States, but it is being marketed to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction in men. The drug is marketed by Eli Lilly and Company, which makes Tadalafil.
